Attack on Women’s Rights

Women Speak Tasmania representatives met with Honourable Sue Hickey Speaker of the Tasmanian House of Assembly to discuss our concerns about Labor and Greens fast tracking of reforms to changes to the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act.

Coincidentally The Mercury published a Letter to the Editor from Isla MacGregor outlining the implications of proposed transgender laws on girls and women.

Letter to the Editor: Attack on Women’s Rights

LABOR and Green’s proposals for transgender law reform are an attack on women’s and girls’ rights. Any person would be able to claim they identify as a woman, regardless of appearance or anything else, and enter girls’ or women-only spaces with impunity. To question any person who allegedly claims to be a woman would be a breach of the law. To question a person about their sex, a person who claims to be a girl or woman and who has male genitalia will be a breach of the law.

Under Labor and Greens proposals the meaning of the words girl and woman will be erased. Women will have a new definition — “cis women”. I will not attend any previously women-only services that include people who say they are women when they are not biological women. No amount of word manipulation will change many women’s views on this matter.
