Greens label anti-transgender stickers hateful

The debate over gender markers on birth certificates has ramped up with anti-transgender stickers described as”hateful and hurtful” appearing throughout Hobart.

The stickers are shaped like penises and carry the phrase “Women don’t have penises”

Transforming Tasmania spokeswoman Martine Delaney said it was clear the stickers had been distributed by groups looking to deny the existence of transgender women.

“It’s a view actively promoted by only extremely conservative Christian groups a very small percentage of women-[transgender-exclusionary radical feminist]- who claim to be feminist,” Ms Delaney said. “The existence of trans people is certainly recognised, accepted and supported by governments and the medical profession”.

Greens leader Cassy O’Connor labelled the Hobart stickers “hateful and hurtful”.

The party, with the support is pushing to have gender markers removed from Tasmanian birth certificates.

“These stickers are an example of the kind of transphobia being peddled as a result of the Liberals’ dishonest statements on changes to the Births, Deaths and Marriages Act”, Ms O’Connor said.

Attorney-General Elise Archer has previously said the Government believed the best way to pursue the Greens’ proposed reform was through the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute. She did not respond to a request for comment yesterday.

Women Speak Tasmania spokeswoman Brownwyn Williams, who has spoken against the Greens’ proposed changes, said her group was not behind the stickers. However, she said she believed what the stickers said was neither transphobic nor up for debate.

“A woman is a female person an a female person doesn’t have a penis,” she said
