Dear Tasmanian Parliamentarian,
On 15 May 2026 the Full Federal Court of Australia delivered its judgment in Giggle for Girls Pty Ltd v Tickle. The court ruled that excluding a trans-identified male from a women-only app on the basis of male appearance constituted direct discrimination on the ground of gender identity. By reclassifying the discrimination as direct and doubling the damages, the decision has made it significantly harder for women to maintain female-only spaces based on observable biological sex. This ruling seriously undermines women’s long-standing sex-based rights and protections under Australian law. SEE- Sall Grover Loses Landmark Appeal on Female Spaces
Women’s sex-based protections must be restored. We therefore invite you to publicly support women’s right to single-sex spaces, services and sports by signing the Women’s Pledge Australia. The Pledge is a simple commitment to uphold biological sex as the basis for women’s rights and protections. You can view and sign the Pledge attach
We would welcome your support and leadership on this important issue for women and girls across Tasmania.
Yours sincerely,
Women Speak Tasmania
