Women Speak Tasmania have had an outpouring of community support in the north west following the cancellation of two venues which WST booked to hold a public forum to discuss legislation that affects women and girls.
WST Spokesperson Dr Elizabeth Caballero was going to present information contained in the WST Dossier which was presented in person to the Attorney General Guy Barnett at a meeting on 20 January 2025.
The Dossier contained an evidence file of the adverse impacts of sex self ID laws on women, girls, LGB people and the whole community:
The Dossier focuses on the serious impacts on freedom of speech for people who wish to question what they consider to be flawed legislation.
When trans rights activists threaten venues, this is a thugs veto and indicative of a lack of acceptance of the need for diversity of opinion in our pluralist society.
A thugs veto is anything but inclusive or kind.
WST yesterday wrote to the Attorney General outlining our case for deferrment of any debate on enhancing hate speech laws until the Government has addressed the serious impacts on freedom of speech from sex self ID and anti discrimination laws.
