On Tuesday 9 April 2024 an extremely important court case for women in Australia and all over the world started in the Federal Court in Sydney. It is the first case to arise which tests the change to the law brought in by the Gillard Government in 2013 which allows men to change their sex simply by identifying as women.
The case is called Tickle v Giggle. It came about because a transwoman, Roxy Tickle wanted to enter a female-only only app called Giggle. As the app is for natal women only, Tickle was not allowed to participate. Tickle then filed the complaint now being heard. Sall Gover, the creator of the app is to be congratulated on her bravery for fighting this case.
If Giggle loses, it is reinforcement of the current law which has removed sex and has replaced it with gender identity. It means the definition of a woman now really does include men. It means that statements like ‘her penis’ are valid.
Given the importance of this case I find it appalling that our local newspaper, The Advocate, has only seen fit to report about it four days later on page 45! To add further insult the Advocate claimed that Sall Grover ‘waged an “online campaign” against a transgender woman! Sall is in fact fighting for the rights of women and any fair reporting would have acknowledged that.
It really does make having a subscription to the Advocate something to be reconsidered.
