The decision yesterday in the UK High Court case of Keira Bell, Sue Evans and Mrs A regarding use of puberty blockers and informed consent at the NHS Tavistock Gender Clinic in London, will have ramifications for treatment of children in Australia and for states that have, or are intending to implement anti conversion therapy legislation.

Spokesperson Isla MacGregor said ‘The UK High Court decision has important implications for the proposed TLRI community consultation about legislation on conversion practices in Tasmania.’

‘The UK decision has important implications for mental health professionals being able to act in the best interests of children without the interference of the gender lobby.’

UK group Transgender Trend reported:

‘The judgment handed down today has established the salient facts about puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones:

Puberty blockers are not ‘fully reversible’.

Puberty blockers do not ‘buy time’, they are the first stage of a medical pathway very few children come off.

There is no evidence that puberty blockers alleviate distress.

The pathway of blockers and cross-sex hormones has serious physical consequences, including the loss of fertility and full sexual function, with profound long-term risks and consequences. The treatment is experimental.

The TLRI Issues Paper has made several critical errors by:

* Only consulting with gender lobby groups and excluding from the selected Reference Group other known Stakeholders including medical organisations, LGB and women’s groups

* Conflating sexual orientation with gender identity* Omitting to include information from all professional medical bodies in Australia which have had input to conversion practices consultations, draft legislation including public hearings’

Women Speak Tasmania have requested a meeting with TLRI Director Dr Brendan Gogarty to discuss these matters” said Isla MacGregor
