Women Speak Tasmania congratulate the Liberal State Conference decision to repeal the state’s gender reforms.
“The Tasmanian gender reforms have most definitely had adverse consequences for girls and women in Tasmania.”
“Girls and women’s freedom of speech and their right to assert that sex-based rights must be protected, has been severely impacted”.
“Women Speak Tasmania have been contacted by many girls and women telling us their stories about how these laws have affected them personally”.
“From female school students reluctant to share facilities with transgender males, to women working in the health and sexual assault support services sector who have been put under pressure to put women at risk in women only spaces, and one woman who lost her job because of her personal views”.
“The Tasmanian Law Reform Institute review of the gender laws has no credibility. The TLRI failed to consult widely with the community and made no contact with major stakeholders including Women Speak Tasmania to seek our views”.
“It remains the majority view in the community, that no person can actually change their biological sex, change their gender yes, but not their sex”.
“There is no debate in the Tasmanian community about recognising gender diverse people contrary to Sue Hickey’s assertion at the Liberal conference”.
“But, that recognition does not and should not come at the expense of women’s sex based rights”.
“Biological females remain unprotected under Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination laws and this has to change”. said Isla MacGregor
