On International Women’s Day, Women Speak Tasmania proudly celebrates women worldwide and here in Tasmania as a distinct sex class—adult human females—whose biological reality has shaped centuries of struggle for rights, safety, and equality.
On this day we honour the suffragists who fought for women’s enfranchisement, recognising women as a political and legal class deserving of voice and protection. Their legacy reminds us that true equality requires laws that accurately name and safeguard women on the basis of sex.
Yet, in Tasmania, a critical gap persists: The Anti-Discrimination Act 1998 does not explicitly include sex (biological sex/female or male) as a protected attribute.
Women Speak Tasmania believes that protecting women as a sex class is essential to upholding the principles of equality that International Women’s Day embodies. Clear legal recognition of sex enables targeted protections against sex-specific harms.
On this important occasion, we call on the Tasmanian Government to amend the Anti-Discrimination Act 1998 to add ‘sex’ as a protected attribute. This modest change would ensure laws reflect biological reality while promoting fairness and inclusion for all.
Women Speak Tasmania invites policymakers, community leaders, and Tasmanians to join us in this important work. We are committed to respectful, evidence-based dialogue to advance women’s sex-based rights for generations to come.
