Women Speak Tasmania has recently backed calls for a federal parliamentary inquiry into the models of care, including medical and surgical interventions, currently being offered to children and young people presenting at gender services in Australia.
The ‘gender affirming’ approach adopted by such as the Gender Clinic at the Royal Melbourne Hospital for Children has come under intense scrutiny in recent months, in Australia and worldwide.
Spokesperson Bronwyn Williams said –
‘Last week we met with an adviser for Attorney-General, Elise Archer, and yesterday we met with Independent MLA, Madeleine Ogilvie, to request they consider supporting the push for a parliamentary inquiry into these matters.’
In our discussions we referred to recent developments in the UK, where consultation has been underway for some months regarding changes to the Gender Recognition Act to allow for sex/gender self-identification. A spokesperson for the Conservative government said last weekend that plans to amend the GRA have been shelved indefinitely in what has been seen as a positive move by women’s rights groups in the UK.
‘Much of the impetus for this UK policy decision relates to concerns raised by several high profile whistle-blowers about the gender-affirming model of care offered to child and adolescent clients of the NHS Gender Identity Development Service.’
‘Also, the number of young adults, particularly young women, coming forward to speak about negative experiences with medical and surgical transition is increasing daily. Charlie Evans, a detransitioned woman in the UK, has recently set up a charitable organisation to support and assist detransitioners. Another group has emerged in the USA – the Pique Resilience Project – with the same aim. In Australia, a new support group, The Phase, was established several months ago.’

‘We anticipate a positive response to our discussions and look forward to further consultation on these issues’, said Bronwyn Williams.
