Women Speak Tasmania Congratulates Elected Members and Candidates Committing to Women’s Pledge Australia

Women Speak Tasmania (WST) are here today in Canberra with One Nation Senators for their signing of the Women’s Pledge Australia.

WST congratulates all elected members of Local, State and Federal Governments and election candidates for committing to Women’s Pledge Australia.

Many Women’s organisations from across the country have long been campaigning for amendments to the Federal Sex Discrimination Act to restore women’s sex based rights.

At every Government election we are seeing a growing number of candidates committing to the Pledge.

We especially acknowledge those who have shown the courage to sign on to the Pledge in the face of threats, intimidation, and retaliation.

Australians from across the political spectrum —from the real left, the centre, the right, and everywhere in between, are coming together in a united front for women’s rights.

Political discourse and the forming of important alliances should no longer be impeded by threats of reputational damage or punitive backlash. The loss of women’s sex-based rights due to the passing of deeply flawed legislation is impacting on everyone in our communities.

Many grass roots organisations across Australia are now working with elected members and candidates and we will continue to work both independently and collaboratively for the protection of the rights, safety, opportunities and dignity for women and girls.
