Today, Premier of Queensland, David Crisafulli announced that puberty blockers and cross sex hormones for minors with gender distress will be banned.
Premier David Crisafulli’s actions following revelations that Cairns Sexual Health Service was providing puberty blockers to children as young as 12 years old without parental consent or any oversight.
In light of such events, Women Speak Tasmania calls on the Minister for Health Jacquie Petrusma to consult with the Queensland premier over his decision and to establish an immediate independent review into the Tasmanian Gender Service’ use of off label puberty blockers for the treatment of minors with gender distress.
The Tasmanian Gender Service continues to prescribe the off label drug Leuprorelin acetate for use as a puberty blocker on young people even though the drug has been banned in the UK and now in Queensland.
The Queensland Health Department has moved to establish a proper independent inquiry into the working of Gender Clinics in the state to bring proper oversight.
We would urge Jacquie Petrusma to consult with Dr Philip Morris, President of the National Association of Practising Psychiatrists (NAPP) to discuss development of the Terms of Reference for the Review.
