Calls On Federal Health Minister to Conduct Inquiry into Gender Clinics

Following on from Tasmania Health Minister Guy Barnett written request to Federal Health Minister Mark Butler to consider establishing a Commonwealth inquiry into gender clinics, WST have kept this momentum going by also writing to Health Minister Mark Butler.

Spokesperson Dr Elizabeth Caballero Pastor said,

‘After our initial request sent to Tasmania’s Health Minister Guy Barnett to conduct a state-based inquiry, we have now followed his lead and written to the Federal Health Minister Mark Butler to request a Commonwealth inquiry into all Australian gender clinics.’

‘WST believe conducting a Commonwealth inquiry will ensure all Australian gender clinics are providing best practise, evidence-based services and that they are committed to having rigorous patient safety data and clinical governance measures established.’

The Cass Review’s poor rating of gender clinic guidelines in Australia no doubt raised many red flags. It would not only be medical negligence to ignore these findings but to not act to ensure gender clinics are using the most up to date ethical medical practices would also be disastrous. From a world view perspective, Australia is embarrassingly lagging behind and the consequences of this are laid solely at the Federal Health Minister’s feet.
