Recent bans and restrictions on the use of puberty blockers and cross sex hormones for treatment of gender dysphoria in minors in numerous European countries, along with changes to insurance cover for doctors in Australia, is a wake up call to Premier Rockcliff over trans child health care.
Spokeswoman Isla MacGregor said
“Women Speak Tasmania are calling on Premier Rockcliff to urgently establish an independent inquiry into treatment guidelines used by the Tasmanian Gender Service.”
“Sweden, Finland, Norway and the UK have banned the use of puberty blockers and cross sex hormones for children with gender dysphoria. France has also introduced restrictions on use of medical interventions on minors as has Denmark most recently. “
“Numerous reviews into puberty blockers and cross sex hormones have found there is insufficient evidence for their efficacy and safety – hence they are experimental. Further, that puberty blockers are irreversible and can cause long term harms including to bones and the brain.”
“On 1 July 2023, MDA National medical insurance company ceased providing insurance to private medical practitioners for medical and surgical interventions for minors with gender dysphoria due to the high risk of future legal claims from detransitioners.”
As Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing, Premier Rockcliff has a duty of care to ensure the Tasmanian Gender Service is providing the best and safest practice of care for young people struggling with gender dysphoria.” said Isla MacGregor
