Gender Neutral Toilet Signs – Letter to Cr Ewim

Letter from Hobart resident, Anne Warburton, to Holly Ewin, Hobart City Councillor, about Councillor Ewin’s proposed gender neutral toilet signs.

We were asked (by the author of the letter) to share it on our page.

Dear Cr Ewin,

I see you have initiated a project to put up posters welcoming transgender people to council-operated women’s toilets. I understand you oppose the involvement of the group Women Speak Tasmania in this project, accusing them of being ‘anti-trans’ in opposing the opening of female toilets to people with intact male genitalia.

It is quite clear from their website that they are not anti-trans; they are merely seeking to assert the right of women to have access to women-only council facilities such as toilets and change-rooms without the risk of being exposed to male genitalia. I and most women I know want the same thing.

This does not make us anti-trans, it makes us women who cherish our time-honoured right to physical privacy in public places.

Are you saying we should no longer enjoy this right?

I await your answer to this question.

Thank you for your attention.

Anne Warburton
