Youth Gender Distress: Pathways to Holistic Care
Thursday 27 November, 1–5 pm – Parliament Reception Room
Australia’s leading clinicians in child and adolescent psychiatry, psychology, and mental health will address a full audience this Thursday at Parliament House. The forum will examine:
- International developments toward more evidence-informed models of care
- The impacts of social contagion and ideological pressure
- Critical gaps in health system safeguards
- Cautious and compassionate clinical guidelines that are being ignored
- The professional risks faced by clinicians who speak out about medical malpractice in Australia
Last week, a group of senior clinicians wrote to federal Health Minister Mark Butler, stating:
“Current practices do not meet scientific and medical credibility and do not meet the standards of evidence-based medicine. They amount to systemic malpractice, enabled by flawed governance structures.”
The clinicians have called for a full federal inquiry—or a Royal Commission—into current practices being referred to as “gender care.”
Internationally, the shift away from the now-discredited “affirmation model” continues to accelerate. Following the UK’s restriction of puberty blockers in 2024, New Zealand last week announced a ban on their use, citing a lack of evidence for safety and long-term outcomes. A growing number of countries have now abandoned medicalised gender pathways for minors in favour of psychotherapeutic, cautious, and holistic care.
This Tasmanian forum offers an important opportunity for concerned citizens, policymakers, and media to receive impartial, evidence-based information on these critical medico-legal developments—issues highly relevant to current practices in Tasmania.
