Women Speak Tasmania congratulates Queensland Minister for Women, Fiona Simpson, for providing long-overdue clarity on the definition of “woman.”
By confirming that “a woman is an adult female human being,” the Queensland Government has restored essential precision to a term that underpins the protection of women’s sex-based rights. This simple but vital definition ensures that laws, policies, and services intended for women and girls can properly recognise biological sex as a relevant category.
In contrast, Tasmania’s Minister for Women, Jane Howlett, has yet to provide the same clarity. Without a clear, sex-based definition of “woman,” it is impossible to ensure fairness in sport, safety in women’s facilities, and the integrity of programs designed to address women’s inequality.
We therefore call on Minister Howlett to affirm, as her Queensland counterpart has done, that women are adult human females — a definition grounded in biological reality and essential for the effective protection of women and girls across Tasmania.
