Safety in Change Rooms at DKHAC Hobart – Letter to Hobart City Councillors

Dear Hobart City Councillors

As a member of Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre (DKHAC) for over six years, I write to express my concern about privacy in the change rooms, with a biological man who now identifies as a woman using the space provided for women.

I recognise this is a complex issue and acknowledge that trans people have a right to feel safe – but so too do others.  I acknowledge the reality of gender dysphoria, but there is a need to balance this with the fact that this could easily become a screen for indecent exposure or voyeurism.

I know of a person who had been sexually abused by a male in the past who was traumatically confronted by ‘a person with a penis’ in the women’s change rooms at DKHAC.

My contention is that ALL people have a right to feel safe.

I would ask that more serious consideration be given to how you might discharge your duty of care to all who use the centre.

Regards,
