Safeguarding Children in Tasmanian Schools: The Urgent Need for Reform

Recently members of Women Speak Tasmania wrote a letter to Tasmanian Education Minister, Jo Palmer, to make her aware to the increasing risks posed to children in Tasmanian schools by the teaching and implementation of gender ideology. Recent policies and practices have highlighted serious gaps in both child safety and current anti-discrimination legislation, leaving young girls particularly vulnerable.

The Problem: Gender Ideology in Schools

Despite claims that inclusive policies protect students, evidence shows that gender ideology at schools can actually increase risks and trauma for children. Examples from Australia and abroad illustrate the dangers:

  • Explicit sexual content in classrooms: Some programs have introduced highly explicit sexual education content, including references to bestiality, without parental consent
  • Unisex or gender-neutral toilets: Schools converting bathrooms into unisex facilities have left girls feeling unsafe and unable to use these spaces

These policies, framed as “inclusive,” can increase anxiety, depression, and isolation among students rather than reducing bullying or promoting well-being.

Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria and Social Transitions

Recent studies and clinical observations suggest that Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria (ROGD), a social contagion affecting primarily young girls, is being fueled by social media and peer influence. Schools facilitating social transition without parental knowledge may inadvertently expose children to irreversible medical interventions in the future, increasing risks of self-harm and psychological distress.

WST has emphasized this concern in correspondence with Minister Jo Palmer and highlighted recommendations from Safeguarding Children in Schools Australia, urging that schools should not facilitate social transition.

Flaws in Anti-Discrimination Law

Current anti-discrimination law has created a framework where policies based on gender ideology can override biological sex protections. This loophole leaves girls’ privacy and safety compromised, particularly in:

  • Toilets and change rooms
  • Sports and extracurricular activities
  • Health and education programs

WST argues that laws must be re-examined to ensure the safety, privacy, and rights of children, especially girls, are never sacrificed for ideological or political agendas.

Safeguarding children from Gender Ideology

Safeguarding Must Be the Priority

The health, safety, and development of children must take precedence over any ideological considerations. Key measures recommended by WST include:

  • Immediate review of gender ideology policies in schools.
  • Parental involvement in educational content related to gender, sexuality, and sexual health.
  • Enforcement of sex-based protections in line with safeguarding guidelines.
  • Transparent consultation processes for policy changes affecting children’s safety.

Protecting Children Requires Urgent Action

Evidence from Australia and the UK demonstrates that gender ideology in schools, when implemented without proper safeguards, can increase risks to children rather than promote safety or inclusion. Children are reportedly up to twelve times more likely to self-harm under policies that promote social transition without careful oversight.

Women Speak Tasmania calls for:

  • A halt to all policies based on gender ideology that compromise child safety.
  • A full investigation into how such ideologies were allowed to take hold in schools.
  • A long-term dialogue between policymakers, educators, and advocacy groups to ensure the rights and safety of children are always prioritized.

Safeguarding children is not negotiable. Schools must be spaces where safety, privacy, and factual, evidence-based education come first.
