Email sent to Members of the Tasmanian Parliament on 27 July 2026
Dear Member of Parliament,
I am writing on behalf of Women’s Speak Tasmania to provide you with our submission on the consultation draft of the Conversion Practices Prohibition Bill 2026, which has been released by the Tasmanian Greens.
The formal submission has been lodged with the Greens. We are also circulating it to all Members of Parliament so that the issues it raises can be considered before the Bill is introduced or debated later this year.
Our position is straightforward:
- We support a targeted prohibition on conversion practices directed at sexual orientation.
- We strongly oppose the inclusion of gender identity within the same legislative framework.
Extending the ban to gender identity risks restricting legitimate clinical exploratory care, increasing legal uncertainty for parents and health professionals, and harming same-sex attracted young people — particularly girls. These concerns are set out in detail in the attached submission, with reference to the Victorian experience, the Cass Review, and the limited Tasmanian evidence base.
We would be happy to discuss the submission further or provide any additional information that would assist you.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Elizabeth Caballero
