McKim’s Conduct Unbecoming of a Senator – Letter to Greens Leader Larissa Waters

This letter was sent to Senator Larissa Waters, Leader of the Australian Greens, on 4 July 2026 in response to Senator Nick McKim’s heated Senate comments on 30 June 2026. In those remarks, McKim criticised One Nation’s approach to transgender issues and used strong language such as “toilet police” and “wannabe genital inspectors” to describe opponents of self-ID policies and related reforms. The writer expresses concern over the Greens’ handling of sex-based rights and the tone of McKim’s statements.

Dear Senator,

Please consider my disappointment with your party missing an opportunity to amend the Sex Discrimination Act to re-include sex as a protected attribute. Especially to protect women and girls from discrimination.

Also, please talk with Senator McKim — many in the community are offended by his dismissive and rude comments that label persons, including parents, women and women’s rights activists as ‘toilet police’ and ‘genital inspectors’ etc.

His comments are derisive and not in keeping with the standards expected of a government minister. His comments trivialise women’s justified concerns for the dignity and safety of women and children due to actions by some men. His comments are especially offensive to women survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence and also women incarcerated in prison; many of whom are survivors of men’s violence.

Suffice it to say that many women feel unrepresented by our PM. His recent sexist comments about women and pop stars are awful.

Yours sincerely,

Australian citizen
