Rape crime data based on sex not gender

WST congratulate the Government for recording rape crime and victim data for statistical purposes according to sex not gender.

Yesterday WST received a reply from Deputy Premier, Attorney General and Minister for Justice Guy Barnett confirming that data for statistical purposed in rape cases:

‘it is the sex of accused people and complainants that is recorded, not the gender.’

It is reassuring that the Government has taken a common sense approach to sex crime data.  WST is not aware of any other jurisdiction in Australia that records sex not gender in rape crime data.

WST continues to meet with state and federal Government Ministers to discuss inclusion of sex as a protected characteristic under Anti Discrimination law and correct definitions of sex under the federal Sex Discrimination Act. The conflation of sex and gender continues to be detrimental to human rights protections of women, children and the community.
