No Support for Mark Latham’s Education Legislation Amendment Bill 2020

On Wendesday 5th of August Mark Latham (NSW MP) has introduced amendments to the Education Legistlation Bill.

As critics of the transgender ideology and trans activism, WST would like to argue for a non-dogmatic position in Australian public education.

We do not however support Mark Latham’s approach of prohibition on discussion of gender non-conformity and withdrawal of advice, services or support for children who are struggling with issues of sex, sexuality or social gender expression.

Letham is using the term “gender fluidity”, but it is unclear what he means by the term. As activists we continually highlight the confusion around terminology related to gender and sex. Gender expression for that matter may change through the life span of a person, for various reasons, but biological sex does not. We have spoken out against conflating the terms and concepts and against substituting gender for sex marker on a Birth Certificate.

“We do believe that children and youth may need advice or support from teachers and school and that the schools should work with parents cooperatively. As the debate around gender, medical treatments for gender dysphoria and legislation around social gender identity continues in our society, teachers and schools require new balanced and nuanced guidelines.

We recommend School and Parents Resources produced by Stephanie Davis- Arai. These well-researched and comprehensive guides produced in England are giving teachers the confidence to use their own professional judgment in critically reviewing existing materials produced by the transgender organisations and draw on their own knowledge of stages of child development.

We would like to see similar guidelines produced in Australia.”, said Joanna Pinkiewicz

The ‘Supporting gender diverse and trans-identified students in schools’ states:

“Our aim is to clarify the information contained within current schools resources and equip teachers to feel confident in their own professional judgement in critically appraising such materials. We provide research-based evidence and alternative strategies which will help teachers to best support not only the child who identifies as transgender but all children who defy gender and sex-role stereotypes, now sometimes referred to as ‘gender diverse’ or ‘gender variant’ children.”
